LOTUS LEAF-SHAPED BOX IN PAINTED ENAMELS

Qianlong period, Qing Dynasty
(A.D. 1736 - 1795)

This ingenious design is modeled on two lotus leaves that fit together to form a box. Its cover is embellished with fragile lotus blossoms in pastel colors, whose petals rise slightly proud of the surface. The artistic conception is exceptionally refined. On the base of the box appears a four-character Qianlong reign mark in standard script calligraphy. Clearly, this box is a product of the Qianlong period’s obsession with stylistic elegance.
